Prehistoric women were for a long time invisible, ignored, overlooked. That was largely due to stubborn bias and preconceptions about their relative unimportance in the grand scheme of humanity's intellectual and technological development. But in recent decades, the discipline of archaeology has become increasingly female, and more research has been done into the place of women in ancient societies. In this lecture, Sophie A. de Beaune, Professor at Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3 and researcher at the Laboratory of Ancient Archaeology and Science in Nanterre, will use archaeological data to illustrate what we currently know about wome and their place in human groups.
Macha Makeïeff's Dom Juan is a distinctively French 18th century, imbued with a measure of Sade. For her, the two famed libertines share a penchant for torment, a desire to make a scandalous public display of their impiety and trangressions of all kinds. Then there is Sganarelle, the valet who holds up a mirror to his master's escapades. Their is a love-hate relationship, a warped game of domination, fascination, and hate. And Elvire, a strong, ambiguous, sublime woman who transcends pain, her voice rebelling against the female fate of humiliation and subjugation before the all-powerful desire of men.
